On the 28th of October 2021, the Hainan Free Trade Port Job Fair made its first off island stop in Hubei’s Wuhan.

The stated purpose of the Fair is to gather talented individuals from around China and around the world to build Hainan into the world’s largest free trade port.

Through a combination of online and offline activities and a thoroughly detailed Employer Guide Booklet listing job positions in private- and state-owned companies in several key industries, the Fair aims to attract all kinds of people to help fill some of the province’s high level job vacancies.

Curious to know why Wuhan was chosen as the first stop reporter Lara Netherlands took some time to research the city and it’s people. During the process she found out that:

• Wuhan has a population of more than 12 million people

• Located smack dab in the middle of China, Wuhan has long been favored by talented personnel and students as a place to pursue their studies or careers.

• Nearly 1.5 million students are enrolled at Wuhan’s 84 universities.

• Wuhan’s best (and most famous) university was established during the Qing dynasty

• Per QS rankings, Wuhan University is one of China’s “Top 10” universities

At the Fair, Netherlands interviewed a number of university students in order to get their thoughts on the information that has recently been released about Hainan, the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and newly implemented talent policies.

Although they had mostly come in search of quality job opportunities, the students whom Netherlands interviewed were aware that the government considers the present and near future crucial periods for Hainan to comprehensively deepen reform and opening-up, and advance the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

With more than 36,000 jobs at the Fair including a large number of highly paid professional and technical postings, it is plain to see that Hainan is now in more urgent need of talents than ever before.

This is part of the reason behind the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Hainan Provincial Government choosing to hold the Fair which is planned to continue throughout the year with additional activities in a number of other cities with a high concentration of talented personnel.

For the event in Wuhan, representatives of nine employers from key industrial parks, medical institutions, universities and enterprises attended via livestream to talk with recent graduates of Wuhan’s major universities and colleges and give them a brief introduction to their businesses and business needs; they also invited the graduates to check out available positions online and send in résumés.

Both holding the view that the construction of Hainan into the world’s largest free trade port presents every pioneering individual with a huge stage for his or her personal and professional development, Liu Qian (Dean of Hainan University’s School of Biomedical Engineering) and Shi Zhaohui (a senior Chinese teacher at Hainan iSchool) were also on site to share with attendees their experience living and working on the island.

Li Jun (Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee) introduced the policy advantages and progress already made by the Hainan Free Trade Port and said in a speech that the  party and the government are both striving to do a good job in their service guarantee work to create a good environment for the growth and development of talents. Examples of how this is already taking place include the formulation of a series of policies such as talent settlement bonuses, children’s education, housing purchase assistance, and medical insurance.

Starting with this Fair, a regular recruitment and release system for job vacancies will be established. With monthly updates, this “cloud recruitment” platform will take advantage of the modern internet to match prospective employers with talents as well as providing a space for remote interviews.
