On June 8, the President of the UN Security Council issued a statement saying that after consultations, the Security Council agreed to recommend the current UN Secretary-General of Portugal, António Guterres, for a second term.

According to UN procedures, after the Security Council recommends the Secretary-General, the General Assembly will confirm it by vote.
Once confirmed by the UN General Assembly, Guterres’ second term will begin on 1 January 2022.
